# Keyboard shortcuts and the command palette

Press Ctrl K (or Cmd K) to search conversations and run any command, and use single-letter shortcuts to move through the inbox without touching the mouse.

The desk is built so you can do most of the day's work from the keyboard.

## The command palette

Press **Ctrl K** on Windows and Linux, or **Cmd K** on a Mac. A small window opens with one box.

- Type the name of a command to run it, for example to go to a screen or open a setting.
- Type a name, email or word from a message to find a conversation and open it.
- Use the up and down arrows to move, **Enter** to run, and **Esc** to close.


## Single-letter shortcuts

These work whenever you are not typing in a box and no pop-up is open.

| ? | Shows the list of shortcuts |
| J / K | Next or previous conversation |
| R | Reply to the open conversation |
| N | Write a private note |
| E | Resolve or reopen the conversation |
| A | Assign it to you, or take your name off |
| G then I | Go to the inbox |
| G then C | Go to contacts |
| G then R | Go to reports |
| G then S | Go to settings |
| Esc | Close a pop-up, or leave the reply box |

## A fast routine

1. Press **J** or **K** to reach the next waiting conversation.
2. Press **A** to claim it.
3. Press **R**, type your answer, and send.
4. Press **E** to resolve it, then **J** for the next one.

## Good to know

- Letters are ignored inside text boxes so you can type normally.
- On a phone, use the buttons in the [inbox](/docs/inbox) instead.
- If a shortcut does nothing, check that a pop-up is not open behind the page.

## Common questions

### Why don't the letter shortcuts work?

They are switched off while you are typing in a box or while a pop-up window is open. Click outside the box or close the window and try again.

Press the question mark key, or open the command palette and use the shortcuts entry.
